Who Won European Parliament Elections in Portugal

Overview

European Parliament will be consisted of  720 seats in 2024 and distribution of seats among the EU member counties as below,

European citizens proceeded to the polls between 6 to 9 June. In Portugal, people voted on 9 June and the results were announced on the same day, The results showing some changes in the population’s political behavior and choice with comparison to the legislative elections in March. This was the 9th EU parliament elections and members has been elected for the term from 2024 to 2029.

In these elections, the socialists are the winners and secured eight member’s seats of the European Parliament (MEP) from Partido Socialista (PS) being elected, 

Partido Social Democrata (PSD) and Centro Democrático Social (CDS) contested this election once again jointly, in the coalition Aliança Democrática (AD). However, besides being the victorious coalition in the legislative elections in the Portugal in March 2024 , AD stayed in second place and secured  seven MEP seats in EU parliament elections. The coalition had the second most votes with 31.1 percent of the votes, one percent less than Partido Sociallista (PS).

Chega remains the third political force in Portugal, however lost several votes, when compared to March’s elections. The extreme right-wing party had 9.79 percent of the votes, totaling more than 300,000 votes, when in the legislative election, more than a million Portuguese citizens voted for Chega. Nevertheless, Chega will have two deputies in Brussels, marking their presence in the European Parliament for the first time.

Iniciativa Liberal (IL) elected two MEPs, having 9.07 percent of the votes and Bloco de Esquerda (BE) secured one seat. Coligação Democrática Unitária (CDU) has also elected only one MEP  in the European Parliament.

As usual,  there is less interest of Portuguese citizens has been observed to polls for European parliament elections. Out of all the voters, only 36.52 percent of the population voted, meaning that less than four million citizens helped decide who would be representing Portugal at the European Parliament.

The MEPs elected from Portugal will sit in the groups of European Parliament according to their political ideology.
